Have you wanted to photograph wildflowers and have results you can be proud of?  In this workshop, Chris Carvalho will share the techniques you need to know to create images that are professional quality and help you express your creative vision.  Both beginning and intermediate skill levels are welcome.  This session is timed to let you immediately use what you've learned to capture the beauty of spring in the Gorge.

What to Bring:

Your camera, including the instruction manual. Both film and digital cameras are welcome. The camera should have a "manual exposure mode.
Extra film or memory cards and batteries
A tripod if you have one. Since we will be working on wildflowers, a tripod that lets you position the camera very close to ground level is preferred.
A comfortable pad for kneeling while doing the afternoon field session.
A day pack or camera bag for carrying your equipment while photographing
Snacks, water, a hat, and sunscreen

What's Covered:

Noon - 1 pm: Before my workshop, Sandy Bisset will share her own photographs in the MJ Murdock Theater in a free session and talk about identifying wildflower species in the area.  Lunch is available in the Basalt Rock Cafe.
1 pm - 3 pm: Wildflower photography tips and technique
3 pm - 4 pm: Afternoon field session on museum grounds
4 pm - 4:30 pm: Wrap-up in the classroom to share results and discoveries

If you have any of the following items, bring them also:

Macro lens
Litedisc or other portable photo sunshade
Lens hood
Small nylon stuff sack
A heavy item that fits into the nylon sack, such as a water bottle or rock
Manual or electronic cable release that fits your camera
A small knife or scissors
Two or four bamboo garden stakes (3 foot length)
Six feet of plastic wrap
If you have an image or two that's been difficult to work with, bring it and I'll see if I can help improve it.

Preparation:

Familiarizing yourself with your camera's manual exposure settings will improve your workshop experience and help you get superior results.  If you have a camera with a macro lens or macro focus feature, experiment with it before the class.  If you have a digital camera, learn how to use the "histogram setting" if it's available, and how to zoom in to see closeup details on pictures you've shot.  If your camera has a spot meter feature, learn about it.  If your camera has exposure compensation, experiment with that before the session.  Everyone who enrolls will receive a set of exercises to learn about these features before attending.

Weather: If we have poor weather, we will do photography exercises inside the classroom with cut flowers and cover some optional course materials.
